About Our Bookstore and Art Gallery

John McWhinnie @ Glenn Horowitz Bookseller is a bookstore and art gallery devoted to buying and selling rare and out of print collectible editions of books. We specialize in the history of the 20th and 21st century avant-gardes in art, literature, photography, and design. Our emphasis is on the highest caliber association copies--books inscribed by authors or artists--in the market. Our goal is to chronicle this important niche of the rare book market through catalogues and exhibitions.

We work with individuals and institutions to build in-depth collections surveying the rise, growth, and development of the most compelling vanguard movements of the last century. Our emphasis is on collection building and to that end we work closely with clients to create collections that reflect our shared interest in the cutting- edge in artistic and popular media. From Dada to Punk, the Luddites to the Lower East Side, we seek out important material that provides a window onto the social, political, and artistic movements that shaped modernity.

John McWhinnie @ Glenn Horowitz Bookseller also features an art gallery. We mount 5 to 8 shows a year, highlighting the up-and-coming as well as the well-established. We have mounted solo exhibitions with artists Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman, Matthew Barney, Elizabeth Peyton, Brigid Berlin, Terry Richardson and Ryan McGinness, amongst others. As part of our mandate to exhibit the most important developments of contemporary art, we have begun an imprint, JMc & GHB editions, to publish artist books. These artist books emerge out of the shared interests of the gallery and the artists it exhibits. In the past year JMc & GHB editions has published artist books with Richard Prince, Matthew Barney, Terry Richardson, and Mats Gustafson.

John McWhinnie @ Glenn Horowitz Bookseller is a collaboration between its two principals, John McWhinnie and Glenn Horowitz. John McWhinnie managed Glenn Horowitz's flagship East Hampton business for 8 years before opening this joint venture with Horowitz in 2005.
